Watercolor Art Class

Every Monday at 10:00 the secondary students have art class. Some of the students take an art class with Miss Karen at the School building and the other students take a watercolor class at Miss Jenn's House. In Miss Karen’s class the students are making self portraits. I am in Miss Jenn’s art class. Each of the students in our class work at their own pace but we have done many of the same projects.

The first picture we painted was a picture that Miss Jenn took. It was of a lady at the beach watching the sunset. It was hard to make the waves look real and to keep the sky and ocean colors from mixing but it really helped me learn more about watercoloring. Over fall when the leaves were changing colors we worked on small paintings of leaves. Although I don’t think that it was my best painting, I did learn about a new technique of using salt to create texture in my paintings. After that we each brought a picture of our house to class, sketched it, and painted it. That picture probably took the longest because I had to measure it to make sure my lines were straight. We all finished our houses at different times so the next painting could be of any picture we had taken over fall. I chose to paint my grandparent’s pond. My favorite project that we did in Miss Jenn’s class was a self portrait of our own eyes. It helped me notice how many colors there really are in people's eyes. Everyone in the class had brown eyes but they still ended up looking very different.

I feel like I have learned alot about lighting, shading, mixing colors, not mixing colors, how to paint smooth, or add texture, and noticing small details that I would not have seen before. This past term has been really fun and I hope I will continue to improve over the next one.
